Austere Primary Care

Austere Primary Care COURSE

Austere Primary Care

This course is designed for paramedics, nurses, Remote Medics, SOF medics, and expedition medics who need to develop knowledge of how to deal with Disease and Non-Battle Injuries (DNBI) encountered whilst working in austere environments, on oil rigs, on expeditions, on transit vessels, and in remote clinics worldwide. This course provides an excellent background in the most common primary care topics encountered by those who manage and treat adults in remote settings.

This course was developed by former Special Forces medics who based the curriculum on the DNBI encountered during operational deployments. The work from Dr COL Mabry formed the basis of the curriculum. Additional content was added from various sources, including the Wilderness Medical Society, Joint Trauma Systems Clinical Practice Guidelines, and the Prolonged Field Care Working Group, which is owned by Specialized Medical Standards.

Why Should I Take This Module?

In austere and resource-limited environments, the majority of clinical encounters are not dramatic trauma cases, but rather the everyday illnesses and minor conditions that quietly degrade health, morale, and operational capability. The Austere Primary Care module equips the remote medic with the structured clinical reasoning, diagnostic discipline, and pragmatic treatment strategies required to manage these presentations effectively without reliance on advanced diagnostics or specialist support. By focusing on high-yield assessment frameworks, rational pharmacology, and context-adapted decision-making, this course transforms uncertainty into clarity and equips practitioners to deliver safe, scalable, and sustainable care where it matters most, at the point of need, far from definitive medical infrastructure.

The Bottom Line: Everyone focuses on trauma but forget that most of your patients will not be trauma….they will be medical.
