Medicine in the Mediterranean 2026: A Landmark Gathering & A New Chapter for CoROM Alumni
The 2026 Medicine in the Mediterranean Conference in Sliema, Malta, brought together clinicians, educators, innovators, and leaders from across the globe for three days of immersive learning and community building. This year’s event was more than a conference – it marked a defining moment in the College of Remote and Offshore Medicine Foundation’s history.
Amid the packed workshops, keynote sessions, and celebrations, one milestone stood out above the rest: the formal creation of the CoROM Alumni Association – and the induction of its first 10 founding members. This new community represents the next evolution of the College’s mission: not only to educate, but to sustain a lifelong network of remote, austere, and wilderness medical professionals who continue to learn, collaborate, and lead long after graduation.
Celebrating Academic Achievement: BSc & MSc Graduates Honoured
Friday evening’s Commencement Ceremony was a highlight of the conference, as graduates from across the world crossed the stage to receive their awards and degrees. The procession recognised achievements at every level, including:
- Bachelor of Science in Remote Paramedic Practice
- Master of Science in Austere Critical Care
- Additional academic awards in Tropical Emergency Medicine and Remote EMT practice
The ceremony was a powerful reminder of the College’s global reach and the dedication of its students – many of whom balance demanding clinical roles in remote, conflict affected, or resource limited environments while pursuing their studies.
These graduates now join a growing community of practitioners shaping the future of austere medicine.
A New Era Begins: The CoROM Alumni Association Launches
The conference also marked the official launch of the CoROM Alumni Association, a long anticipated initiative designed to strengthen professional ties and support graduates throughout their careers.
The first 10 founding members were welcomed during the weekend—an exciting beginning for a community that will continue to expand as more graduates join its ranks.
The Alumni Association is built around three pillars:
- Connection: A global network of remote, offshore, wilderness, and austere medicine professionals – spanning continents, specialties, and operational environments. Members gain access to a community that understands the realities of working at the edge of healthcare
- Continued Growth: Alumni receive opportunities for ongoing professional development, exclusive events, and priority access to future CoROM workshops and conferences. The Association also supports academic progression, research collaboration, and mentorship.
- Contribution: Members help shape the future of the College by contributing to curriculum development, supporting student learning, and representing CoROM in the wider medical community. Alumni voices will guide the evolution of remote and austere medical education.

A Conference That Reflected the Future of Austere Medicine
From drone enabled resuscitation logistics to Arctic survival medicine, from AI in clinical workflows to ventilation in resource limited environments, the 2026 programme showcased the cutting edge of austere medical practice.
Hands on workshops – including Partial REBOA, DCR case studies, and austere transfusion techniques – gave participants the chance to refine lifesaving skills under expert guidance.
Keynotes from global leaders such as Dame Claire Bertschinger and Donnie Woodyard Jr. challenged attendees to think beyond clinical protocols and embrace leadership, ethics, and innovation in the world’s most demanding environments.
The energy throughout the weekend was unmistakable: a community united by purpose, strengthened by shared experience, and ready to push the boundaries of what remote medicine can achieve.
Looking Ahead
With the Alumni Association now officially launched, CoROM graduates have a new home – a place to stay connected, stay inspired, and stay at the forefront of austere medical practice. The first 10 members have set the foundation. Many more will follow.
And as the College continues to grow, so too will the impact of its alumni – on mountainsides, oil platforms, conflict zones, research stations, and every remote corner of the world where skilled clinicians are needed most.
