Paramedic Skills Week
The Paramedic Skills Week is an advanced six-day programme designed for graduates of the Remote Team Medic (RTM) course. Building upon the assessment, diagnostic, and clinical reasoning skills developed during RTM, the week prepares paramedic students to perform advanced life support interventions in remote, austere, expeditionary, offshore, humanitarian, and conflict environments.
The Paramedic Skills Week develops advanced procedural and clinical skills traditionally taught within paramedic programmes. Participants learn how to perform, manage, and troubleshoot advanced airway procedures, vascular access, cardiac emergencies, medication administration, and critical care interventions in environments where definitive care may be delayed for hours or days.
The programme combines evidence-based paramedic practice with austere medicine principles, allowing practitioners to adapt advanced life support procedures to resource-limited settings.
The Paramedic Skills Week is the second step in the CoROM Remote Paramedic programme and prepares students for advanced remote-practitioner and critical-care training.
To develop competent remote paramedics capable of safely performing advanced life support procedures and managing critically ill or injured patients in austere and resource-limited environments.
Upon successful completion, participants will be able to:
- Perform advanced airway management.
- Establish peripheral and intraosseous vascular access.
- Administer emergency medications safely.
- Interpret ECG rhythms.
- Manage cardiac arrest and peri-arrest patients.
- Conduct advanced trauma interventions.
- Manage medical emergencies requiring ALS care.
- Utilise point-of-care diagnostics to support treatment decisions.
- Integrate ALS interventions into prolonged casualty care situations.
- Develop evacuation and transport plans for critically ill patients.
- Function as an advanced provider within a remote medical team.
Participants rotate through instructor-led practical skills stations designed to develop the advanced clinical competencies required for prehospital and austere healthcare practice. Training focuses on advanced airway management, including supraglottic airway insertion, endotracheal intubation, video laryngoscopy, surgical airway principles, and capnography. Students also develop proficiency in peripheral intravenous and intraosseous access, fluid therapy, vasopressor administration, shock management, ECG interpretation, dysrhythmia recognition, and the assessment and management of acute cardiovascular emergencies, including bradycardia, tachycardia, acute coronary syndromes, cardiac arrest, and post-return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) care.
