Remote Team Medic
The Remote Team Medic (RTM) is an advanced six-day programme designed for graduates of the Remote Emergency Medical Technician (REMT) course. Building upon the foundations of emergency and trauma care, the RTM prepares medics to manage the broad range of medical problems encountered during prolonged deployments in remote, austere, expeditionary, offshore, humanitarian, and conflict environments.
This is an Advanced EMT course. There are AEMT topics and skills stations that cover the AEMT skills needed whilst working in a remote, austere and resource-limited environment.
Whilst the REMT focuses on trauma, the RTM expands the medic’s capabilities into primary care, clinical assessment, diagnostic reasoning, and prolonged casualty management. Delegates learn to evaluate and manage the illnesses and injuries most commonly encountered in remote populations where access to physicians, nurses, and evacuation assets may be delayed or unavailable.
The programme incorporates the CoROM CHART assessment framework, specifically designed for austere primary care, providing students with a structured approach to patient assessment, differential diagnosis, treatment planning, and disposition decisions in resource-limited environments.
To develop competent remote healthcare practitioners capable of independently assessing, diagnosing, and managing common medical presentations in austere and resource-limited environments while integrating prolonged casualty care principles and evidence-based clinical decision-making.
Upon successful completion, participants will be able to:
- Conduct comprehensive patient assessments using the CHART framework.
- Perform advanced history taking and physical examination.
- Develop appropriate differential diagnoses.
- Recognise and manage common primary care presentations.
- Utilise CPRO and BEAST assessments to monitor patient status.
- Formulate treatment and follow-up plans appropriate to austere settings.
- Determine appropriate evacuation and disposition decisions.
- Document patient encounters using standardised clinical formats.
- Manage casualties during prolonged field care situations.
The Remote Team Medic (RTM) programme focuses on the assessment, diagnosis, and management of common medical presentations encountered in remote, austere, expeditionary, offshore, humanitarian, and conflict environments. Building upon the foundations established during the Remote Emergency Medical Technician (REMT) programme, participants develop advanced patient assessment skills through the CoROM CHART framework, learning to obtain comprehensive histories, perform focused physical examinations, recognise clinical red flags, formulate differential diagnoses, and develop appropriate treatment and disposition plans. The course emphasises evidence-based clinical decision-making in resource-limited settings where access to definitive care may be delayed or unavailable.

Course content includes clinic-based medical care and presentations in cardiovascular, respiratory, neurological, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, dermatological, musculoskeletal, infectious disease, environmental, and behavioural health, commonly encountered by remote healthcare providers. Through a combination of lectures, practical skills stations, and realistic patient scenarios, participants learn to utilise CPRO and BEAST assessments, point-of-care diagnostics, documentation systems, and prolonged casualty care principles to manage patients safely over extended periods. Particular emphasis is placed on independent clinical reasoning, patient monitoring, follow-up care, evacuation decision-making, and the integration of primary care and prolonged casualty care concepts into austere medical operations.
